Ian graduated from Riverdale Baptist School, where he helped lead the program to multiple championships while serving as team captain and starting catcher. He continued his playing career at Newberry College, where he was a five-year catcher, earned the starting role, helped the program win the 2019 South Atlantic Conference regular-season championship, and host its first NCAA Regional. After his playing career he spent two seasons on the Newberry coaching staff, helping the team win the 2022 South Atlantic Conference Tournament Championship while working with catchers, hitters, and baserunners.
